Mercor vs DataAnnotation

In one line each — Mercor: High published rates for credentialed professionals, reliable weekly pay, projects that end without notice. DataAnnotation: Fast entry, real hourly rates, and a steady stream of worker reports of accounts closed without notice. Below, the two compared side by side. Every claim on this page is sourced in the full review it comes from, and each review names where its figures came from and what they leave out.

The two platforms in depth

Mercor

Mercor places credentialed professionals into contract work training and evaluating AI models for labs and enterprises, and it is one of the few platforms in this category that prints a rate on every listing before you apply. If you hold a real credential in medicine, law, finance, software or a research field, the top of its board pays more than any general annotation platform, and contractors say repeatedly that the money lands every Wednesday in the amount expected. The trade is that “project-based” bites hard here: Business Insider reported that contractors on a canceled Meta project were offered a near-identical successor at $5 an hour less, and reviewers describe projects ending while they are still onboarding. You also accept a mandatory desktop tracker that screenshots you, a government-ID background check, and a company whose systems were breached in March 2026. This suits a working professional who wants high-rate contract work alongside other income, not someone who needs a predictable monthly paycheck.

Best for

  • Credentialed professionals in medicine, law, finance or engineering with other income
  • People who want to see the rate before spending time on an application
  • Specialists who can work async around a full-time career
  • Anyone who values being paid on a fixed weekly cadence

DataAnnotation

DataAnnotation is the quickest way into AI training work that pays by the hour rather than by the cent: no interview, no resume screen, no portfolio, just an unpaid assessment and an identity check. Workers who get in and get projects say the money lands on time through PayPal and that they set their own hours with no minimum commitment. The risk sits on the other side of that. Across Trustpilot reviews and BBB complaint records, workers describe losing access to the entire platform at once, with no reason given and no appeal, sometimes with earnings still pending. Treat it as supplementary income you could lose access to at short notice, not as a job.

Best for

  • People who want to start this week without an interview
  • Strong readers and writers who like close checking of text
  • Specialists in law, finance, medicine, coding, or STEM wanting side income
  • Anyone who needs unstructured hours with no minimum commitment

Which should you pick?

Mercor is a better fit if you have engineering or domain-expert credentials and don't mind an application process before you see any tasks.

DataAnnotation runs an interview-based application according to its own site — likely the better fit if you have engineering or domain-expert credentials, and the review names which of its own pages says so.

General guidance only — the full reviews above cover what each platform actually confirms, and nothing stops you from applying to both.
